Tragedy

This week we have seen the funeral of a local police officer. A father, a husband, a son, who daily put his life on the line for others and paid the ultimate price. The person allegedly responsible is a 15 year old boy. The media claim that while making a routine traffic stop the police officer identified that non of the teenage boys in the minivan were the owner. At that point the vehicle lurched forward, dragging him around 300m until the driver lost complete control and the minivan rolled over, crushing the officer. He did not die instantly and the emergency services battled to save him. The news has sent shock waves through the community. The loss of an emergency personnel always seems to pack a serious  punch. The age of the driver, the obvious lack of a drivers license and the suggested routine nature of the stop all seem to be adding to the tragedy. It’s not yet clear as to the charges that the boy will face or if he is going to be tried as an adult. I can’t help thinking that there was more than one life that ended on the day of the accident. Hopefully with the support of family and friends his widow and children will be able to eventually piece together some kind of life. I doubt that will be the case for the 15yr old boy, who although innocent until proven guilty, will always be known as the cop killer and if found guilty will spend the rest of his adolescence and formative years behind bars coming to terms with the fact that no amount of wishing can bring back the brave officer and the life as he knew it is gone for ever. All it takes is an error in judgment, a lack of concentration, the wrong place at the wrong time. How many more tragedies do we have to see. Let’s educate our teens. It’s not just guns and knives that are deadly, vehicles are the ultimate weapon.
